SUN YAT-SEN WAS staying at a grand hotel in Denver, Colorado, at the start of the uprising in 1911 that led to the collapse of 2,000 years of imperial rule. The local Rocky Mountain News was on the side of the English-speaking baptised Christian who wore European-style suits and saw Jesus as a “revolutionary” like himself.
